"what we think and how we came to think it" is the subtitle of the book. In no way does the book get into this. What are the thought processes and mechanics and environmental problems which bring about new ideas? Armesto remains in his usual area of cultural history, which is only now and again enlightning.I'm suspicious of books with long lists of praise and I'm afraid this book confirms this.
